about george lynch

george lynch’s expressionistic art centers on conveying God’s character.
Drawing from the word pictures he sees in Scripture or hymns, Lynch's
paintings provides modern visual cues that bring a Bible passage or song
rushing into the viewer’s mind.

An experienced advertising executive, Lynch leverages his professional
skills in combining words and visuals to communicate in his contemporary
art.  “The juxtaposition of modern art to God’s ancient, unchanging
character reminds me how active and in-the-now He is,” says Lynch.

His artistic approach to religious themes purposely avoids iconic imagery.
“I like to provoke a conversation with art.  Including things that are easily
decoded as Christian, seems to put art in a ‘category.’  When people are
compelled by the visual to understand more about the idea behind it, it’s
exciting,” says Lynch.

Lynch also sees art as a way of keeping God’s truth ever before him and
his family.  “Deuteronomy 6 tells us to tie God’s commands as symbols on
your hands and write them on the doorframes of our houses and on your
gates.  For my “less-is-more” aesthetic, moving those truths into paintings
was simpler than having Post-it notes all over the house.  Living with
visually stimulating reminders of God’s goodness and grace, keeps me
centered on Him.”

George and his wife have a daughter (11), a son (9) and a Golden
Retriever.
inspired by Love

Raised in a Christian home, my faith in God was never far away.  But
after a season as a rebellious young adult, I became convinced of the
truth that I'd been taught.  At 30, personal crisis hit and I began to seek
God diligently in Bible study, discussion with others and prayer.  For the
first time, I began seeing how deeply God loved me.  And a deep and
satisfying love relationship with God began.

simple, modern

I am drawn to simple, modern architecture.  In clean lines and austere
spaces I sense the grandeur of God.  That preference led me to loving
simple, modern art.  In museums and galleries, bold, intriguing use of
space on a canvas would evoke emotion in me.  Then would I look closely
at the artist's card next to a painting -- and be sometimes disappointed to
find that work was named: "Untitled".   For me, I missed there being a
reason for the grand work.

a visual cue

At a conference, I heard author Lee Strobel discuss his book “The Case
for Christ.”  A question was asked about Christ’s words on the cross, “My
God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”  I had always thought that
Jesus’ words came from the total separation from His father that he was
feeling.  At that point in time, the weight of the world’s evil, despicable sin
was placed squarely on him.

Lee shared another view.

Jesus was quoting the first line of Psalm 22. Written by David, it starts in
despair.  Then through the course of opening his heart in conversation to
his God, the psalm resolves that indeed God had been right there through
every moment -- working out His best for David.  It ends with David
praising God for His goodness.

So by quoting the first line of that psalm, Jesus brought Psalm 22 to the
memories of the learned Jews watching his crucifixion.  Trained to
memorize the scriptures, the first few words of a well-known passage
would trigger the Jewish mind to recite the entire passage.    Jesus was
using his last breath to utter a mnemonic.  To well up a passage that
would encourage those that watched him die.

Wow.  The powerful truth of God and His character being brought into the
moment.  Jesus used an audible cue.

My visual mind asked ”What about a visual cue?”  Could art make following
God’s advice in Proverbs 3:3-4...

3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.

.. easier for me and my family to live everyday?  Could the excitement I
found in a personal relationship with God be evidenced in paintings?
Could I surround myself with visual excitement that drew me closer to the
Living God?   Could I give my walls voice?  Could my personal passion for
expressionism juxtaposed to God’s ancient, unchanging character
demonstrate how active and in-the-now He is?  Could my advertising
career – bringing visuals and words together – be God’s training for
something else in my life?

So I began to paint.

the process

I have always been drawn to word pictures.  Phrases that painted a
picture in my mind, that were graphic.  As I read the Bible in my quiet
times, I doodle simple graphics conveying what I was learning, thinking,
feeling.  It's a joyful thing.  I get a great sense of God's revelation.  That
He'd drawn me to that verse or insight.

When I get to the studio, I prepare my heart.  If there's a cool breeze --
all the better.  When a song has inspired my art -- which is often -- i listen
to the music while I paint.  Painting is a worshipful experience.  I like to be
alone but with intermittent visits from my wife or kids.  Their words
encourage an edit, a bit more or to stand still.

I marvel at how God prompts me to know when I have completed a
painting.  I always get a sense -- an almost-out-of-body experience --
that it's complete.

Psalms 22

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?  Why are you so far from saving me, so
far from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do
not answer, by night, and am not silent.

3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the praise of Israel.
4 In you our fathers put their trust;
they trusted and you delivered them.
5 They cried to you and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not disappointed.

6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by men and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads:
8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue
him. Let him deliver him,
since he delights in him."

9 Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you made me trust in you even at my mother's
breast.
10 From birth I was cast upon you;
from my mother's womb you have been my
God.
11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of
Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions tearing their prey
open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my
bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to
wax; it has melted away within me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my
mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.
16 Dogs have surrounded me;
a band of evil men has encircled me,
they have pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones; people stare and
gloat over me.
18 They divide my garments among them
and cast lots for my clothing.

19 But you, O LORD , be not far off;
O my Strength, come quickly to help me.
20 Deliver my life from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

22 I will declare your name to my brothers;
in the congregation I will praise you.
23 You who fear the LORD , praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or disdained
the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help.

25 From you comes the theme of my praise in
the great assembly; before those who fear you
will I fulfill my vows.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied;
they who seek the LORD will praise him-
may your hearts live forever!
27 All the ends of the earth will remember and
turn to the LORD, and all the families of the
nations will bow down before him,
28 for dominion belongs to the LORD
and he rules over the nations.

29 All the rich of the earth will feast and
worship; all who go down to the dust will
kneel before him- those who cannot keep
themselves alive.
30 Posterity will serve him; future generations
will be told about the Lord.
31 They will proclaim his righteousness
to a people yet unborn-for he has done it.
